Both profiles are proven options. Half round guttering offers a simple, recognisable form that works across many properties. Ogee guttering has a more shaped front edge, with a moulded, cyma-style curve that creates a stronger architectural line and can provide useful flow capacity in larger formats. The right answer depends on the building, the roof area and the drainage layout rather than appearance alone.
Ogee versus half round gutters at a glance
Half round is the classic curved profile. Viewed from the end, it forms a clean semicircle, making it a natural choice for cottages, traditional houses, modest extensions and buildings where the rainwater system should sit quietly beneath the eaves. In aluminium, it is lightweight, corrosion-resistant and available with matching outlets, stop ends, brackets and downpipes.
Ogee guttering has a more decorative, contoured face. The profile is often associated with Victorian and Edwardian architecture, although modern extruded aluminium ogee systems can look equally at home on new-build housing, blocks of flats and commercial elevations. The sharper lines make the gutter more visible, which is an advantage where the roofline is intended to be part of the design.
Neither shape is automatically better. A small roof with sensible falls and correctly sized downpipes may perform well with either. A wide roof plane, a valley discharge or an exposed site may need a deeper or wider profile regardless of whether it is half round or ogee.

Cost, maintenance and service life
Half round is often the more economical-looking choice because the profile is simple and widely specified. Yet the total installed cost depends on much more than the gutter section. Brackets, corners, outlets, stop ends, downpipes, access equipment, roof height and the number of changes in direction can all affect the final figure.
Ogee systems may cost more where a larger profile, seamless manufacture or a heritage-style cast section is required. That additional outlay can be justified when it improves drainage capacity, matches the architecture or avoids a visually unsuitable replacement on a prominent façade.
Aluminium offers a strong long-term case for both profiles. It will not rust like untreated steel or cast iron, and it is considerably lighter than cast iron for transport and fitting. Powder-coated finishes are durable, although gutters still benefit from routine inspection. Leaves, moss, silt and tennis balls do not care which profile has been fitted.
Clear the system regularly, especially after autumn leaf fall, and check joints, brackets and outlet areas during maintenance visits. If water marks appear below the gutter, investigate promptly.
