For a small replacement project, uPVC can be a practical and familiar choice. For buildings where longevity, colour stability, architectural detail or a coordinated metal roofline matters, aluminium usually offers a stronger long-term specification. The right decision should start with the roof, not the brochure.
Aluminium versus uPVC fascias: the key differences
The most obvious difference is the material itself. uPVC fascia boards are lightweight plastic sections, generally supplied in white, black, anthracite grey or wood-effect finishes. They are widely used on domestic rooflines and are typically fitted over existing timber or as part of a replacement board system.
Aluminium fascias are formed from metal, commonly extruded or pressed aluminium depending on the profile and application. They can be powder coated in a broad choice of colours, allowing the fascia to match aluminium gutters, downpipes, windows, cladding or coping details. This is particularly useful where a roofline is designed as a visible architectural feature rather than a background element.

For a carefully renovated period home, a high-value self-build or a commercial property with visible elevations, aluminium can represent better value over the life of the roofline. It avoids the false economy of selecting a board that looks out of place or needs earlier replacement because it has faded, distorted or become damaged.

For either material, the installation should include sound backing or rafter-end support, correct drip detail, suitable soffit ventilation where required, and a gutter profile sized for the roof catchment. A fascia that looks good on day one is only successful if rainwater reaches the downpipes without running behind the gutter or spilling over the front edge.
When uPVC is the sensible choice
uPVC is often appropriate for a standard domestic replacement where the roofline is uncomplicated, the budget is limited and the existing appearance is conventional. It can also suit homes where matching plastic gutters and soffits are already in good condition.
Choose a quality board rather than the thinnest available capping product, and do not hide failed timber behind it. A full replacement board fixed to sound structure is usually the more dependable route where the existing timber fascia has deteriorated.
