A downpipe may be a small part of the rainwater system, but it determines whether water leaves the roof cleanly or backs up at the gutter line. Choosing a profile only because it looks right can lead to overflowing gutters in heavy rain. Knowing how to choose downpipes means matching capacity, outlet size, building style and fixing details from the start.

For a straightforward replacement, the existing gutter outlet and drainage position often set the specification. On a new build, extension or renovation, there is more scope to select a complete aluminium system that performs well and suits the property. The right answer depends on roof area, gutter profile, rainfall exposure, downpipe route and the appearance required.

Start with the gutter outlet and roof drainage capacity

A downpipe cannot take more water than its outlet will pass, so begin at the gutter rather than at ground level. Measure the outlet connection, confirm its shape, and establish whether the system uses round, square or rectangular downpipes. A round pipe cannot simply be substituted for a square or rectangular outlet without a suitable adaptor, and improvised connections are a common source of leaks.

Capacity matters most where a roof has a large catchment area, a long gutter run or a concentrated discharge point. A modest porch roof has very different drainage needs from a wide commercial elevation or a roof feeding into an internal valley. Heavy downpours can fill gutters quickly, particularly where leaves, moss or silt reduce flow.

Square downpipes offer a more defined architectural line. They are often selected for contemporary homes, rendered elevations and properties with square or box-style rainwater goods. Rectangular downpipes can provide substantial flow capacity in a compact projection from the wall, making them useful where space is limited or where a commercial system needs to handle larger volumes.

Cast aluminium profiles are particularly suitable for period properties, listed buildings and heritage-led renovations. Their substantial appearance complements traditional cast gutters and ornamental hopper heads. Extruded aluminium systems give a crisp, consistent finish for modern and traditional schemes alike, while pressed aluminium is frequently specified for box guttering and commercial applications.

Do not mix profiles simply because the dimensions appear close. Components should be designed as a compatible system, including outlets, offsets, shoes, clips and hopper heads. This produces a neater installation and avoids unnecessary site alterations.

Select the right material for the building and site

Aluminium is a practical choice for rainwater systems because it is lightweight, corrosion-resistant and available in a wide range of profiles. It does not rust in the way untreated steel can, and its lower weight makes handling and fitting more manageable on site.

For many projects, aluminium also offers a useful balance between long service life and architectural flexibility. Cast aluminium can replicate the depth and character expected on older buildings, while extruded and pressed products suit clean-lined modern designs. Powder-coated finishes allow downpipes to coordinate with windows, doors, cladding, fascias or guttering rather than being limited to a standard colour.

The site environment still needs consideration. Coastal locations, exposed elevations and busy urban areas can place greater demands on finishes and fixings. Specify an appropriate factory-applied powder coating, and ensure cut ends, joints and fixing points are treated in accordance with the system guidance. Where downpipes are vulnerable to impact or tampering, anti vandal downpipe systems may be more appropriate than standard surface-fixed pipework.

Plan the route from outlet to drain

Offsets are used where the downpipe needs to move in or out from the wall. Downpipe length is another practical detail. Measure from the outlet to the intended discharge point, allowing for sockets, bends, shoes and any offsets. At the bottom of the pipe, decide how water will be discharged. A shoe may direct water into an open gully. There is little benefit in increasing downpipe capacity if water then ponds around the base of the wall.

Downpipes need sufficient support to remain straight and secure through seasonal movement, wind and repeated water flow. Clip spacing varies by profile, wall construction and manufacturer guidance, but clips should be positioned close to joints and bends as well as at regular intervals along straight lengths.

The fixing method must suit the substrate. Solid brick, blockwork, timber frame and external insulation systems each require appropriate screws, plugs or specialist fixings. On insulated or rendered walls, avoid compressing the finish or creating weak fixing points. A secure bracket layout protects both the pipework and the façade.

Aluminium systems may use socketed, swaged or bolted connections depending on the profile. Swaged pipe gives a neat telescopic joint, while cast systems often use more visible mechanical fixings that suit their traditional character. Anthracite grey, white and bespoke colours are widely used on contemporary projects where roofline products need to align with window frames or cladding.

A contrasting downpipe can be a deliberate architectural detail, but it can also make every offset and clip more noticeable. On period façades, a sympathetic colour and traditional profile can help the rainwater system sit comfortably with the building. On commercial elevations, consistent colour matching across gutters, downpipes, fascias and copings creates a more considered finish.

If a particular RAL colour is required, confirm it before the order is placed, especially where additional components may be needed later. Bespoke powder coating gives flexibility, but colour consistency is easiest to manage when the full system is specified together.
